I Think I Figured It Out

I think I went through 8 more boxes today. No easy feat considering I was dizzy when I woke up. It was solved with some rest and an egg sandwich. I really need to make sure I'm full when I drink my meds.

Anyway, I think I understand better what Mom was trying to do. She left a lot of fabric ready for piecing and unfinished quilt projects. She also left a couple of non-quilting projects to finish. I also found a number of her earlier projects.

Here's what I think Mom left as an assignment:

1. Fabric for piecing - a lot are square and triangle pieces which I think is meant to be a blanket. Some of the cut fabric are meant for her favorite fan block quilt to make throw pillow covers.

2. Make clothes for Sto. Niño - there's a few unfinished clothes for Sto. Niño and fabric that's meant for Him too. Good thing she left a pattern on how to make the clothes.

3. Maong pieces - it looks like she cut quite a number of jeans! I found a bag of unfinished coin purses, so maybe she meant to make a lot to give away, sell, or use for the rosaries she was making.

4. Beads, beads, beads - Mom left a lot to make more rosaries.

5. Unfinished quilted throw pillow projects - I found a number sandwiched already in wadding. I have had to be careful with it si ce it had pins all over. These will be the easiest to finish.

Very tall order! 😅

Mom's Quilting Homework

I spent the fast week sorting Mom's sewing materials. Oh boy, just like her collection of beads, I should have expected she'd leave a huge collection of fabric.

My Mom didn't really buy fabric. She'd get scraps from my aunt's dress making shop. My tita used to export to Japan, so the scraps were really nice and perfect for quilting.

Sorting through the boxes was like going through a field with landlines. I had to be careful because there were a lot of random pins, especially for the unfinished projects she left.

And that's what surprised me. Mom left at least 50 unfinished projects. I didn't count anymore since I filled up four boxes with unfinished projects. I'm surprised my Mom didn't finish the projects because she told me I should finish projects before moving on to a new one.

I also sorted fabric she already cut. She also drew lines on it too, so it'd be easier to piece together. I'm trying to figure out what she was trying to make. I'll try to do what she didn't finish.

One thing that will be hard for me to finish are the clothes she was making for Sto. Nino. I don't really make clothes, but I'm willing to try.

The washing and ironing continues!

Mom's Quilting

I was a child when Mom started making quilt projects. I'm not sure where she learned. She just got some cut fabric from Tita Maming's shop and since I was makulit, Mom started teaching me too. I remember we'd go to Divisoria and Binondo to buy materials too.

Sorting Mom's things continues. Today I sorted stuff from her bedroom and found a couple of interesting items. Together in a box were some of her earlier quilted throw pillows. She made these by hand.

In another box were some books and booklets I got for her from Singapore and Japan. There were also leaflets from JoAnn's probably from the US. There was also a box full of patterns she made.

Part of the haul was the sewing kits I got for her. One had the fat quarters we bought at Spotlight, mostly unused. The other had thread and other knick knacks. The contents of both kits looked like she organized it to be stored. I'll probably go through it another day.

I feel sad. Sewing together was one of the things my Mom and I would do together. We still did it whenever she'd be in our home. When I got very sick I would still cut fabric for her. At some point though I noticed she liked working in her paper projects, so I switched to cutting paper for her. I miss my Mom and hope I can finish going through her stuff soon.
