My Mom kept telling me that our house was built to withstand earthquakes. She told me that the structure was meant to sway with the earthquake. True enough, our house never had structural issues save for the areas that were added post-construction
I realized my parents built a sturdy house because of their experience from the "1968 Ruby Tower earthquake". Mom said they were lucky that their huge aparador did not fall on them. No wonder majority of our cabinets were built in.
Through the years we experienced a lot of typhoons, flooding, and earthquakes. I don't recall feeling any earthquake in our home. My parents also treated disasters/issues as they came. They just made sure we always had candles and canned goods.
I miss those days when we didn't have si much anxiety over "possibilities ". Back in the day, our parents didn't overthink things and just did what was needed to be done. We can't say whether the dangers back then was less risky compared to now. We just need to take a leap of faith and pray for protection.
