Filipino Indie Film: Sa Pagdapo ng Mariposa

I've been invited countless of times to watch Filipino-made indie films, but it was only at the invitation of high-school-laboratory-partner-turned-multi-awarded-film-director (Rica Arevalo, Cinemalaya best director for "ICU Bed #7") that I succumbed to watching. I'm not much of a movie-goer so that's the main reason I haven't gone to any of the Cinemalaya festivals.

So for our monthsary, Sweetie graciously agreed to accompany me to watch Rica's short film "Gusto Kita Too" which was bundled with "Sa Pagdapo ng Mariposa". He didn't have any idea what he was getting into heh.

I saw AJ's plug-post about "Sa Pagdapo ng Mariposa" a few weeks ago so I had an idea what to expect. The film was about the struggle of Carlito Mariposa (Josh Deocares) in finding his true self. Being a physical therapist he becomes the caregiver of the paralyzed Agustin Vergeire (Marcus Madrigal) and that's where the conflict starts. Carlito falls in love with Agustin but struggles in accepting it since he grew up believing that he should stick to the traditional role of men and men do not fall in love with other men!

The storyline was very interesting. It's nothing new to me since I have a lot of friends who went through the same struggle (yup, I'm a fag hag! and proud to be one). Things were going on smoothly with the story, moving back and forth from past to present but this is what unleashes Carlito's angst about his true self. One would be tricked into thinking that after the gripping introduction that the story would end like how the sun sets, slowly and with the same steady beat it had acquired when Carlito showed up as a 25-year old caregiver. BUT! There's a definite twist at the end. I ended up gripping Sweetie's hand in the last few segments because I didn't expect the Carlito to end up like that. All I can say without giving anything away is "Poor, poor Agustin".

The story was very good and interesting. I just felt that they could've paced it faster, an hour and a half just seemed like forever. There was also quite a number of scenes that made me dizzy because the camera kept bobbing up and down. Made me think that whoever was holding a camera was pasmado. I don't know though if it was really presented that way, but it really made me dizzy.

The film also had a lot of songs played in it. They were great songs (Sa Ugoy ng Duyan was sung by Kuh Ledesma), I just hope they didn't need to finish the full length of the songs, it probably contributed to slowing down the pace.

The actors? Let's just say that Carlito scared me real good and I don't want to bump into him anywhere since I can't forget what he did in the last part of the movie. That's means they were effective actors.

Sa Pagdapo ng Mariposa is an interesting film, definitely indie but I have a feeling if you put celebrities as the actors it would be something that a lot of people would watch. I just cannot imagine any of the famous actors playing the roles though because it would probably get controversial.

Sa Pagdapo ng Mariposa and Gusto Kita Too show schedules
June 4-10 IndieSine, Robinson's Galleria
June 11-17 Robinson's Ermita

Up next: Gusto Kita Too and an interview with it's director Rica Arevalo

Pork Barrel

No, I'm not referring to the political term. I'm referring to Portico's yummy pork barrel which I fortunately sampled during the Spot.ph bloggers food tour.

And I'm posting about it just now! Arggghhh!

I know, I know it's been a pain to start posting about my experience in the Spot.ph bloggers food tour which happened last April. It's been a pain, not because it was not fun, but because I ended up accumulating too much content and I got overwhelmed with it all. There was also iBlog4, the Juned Sunido Manila Tour and our visit to the Manila Ocean Park which coincided with the food tour.

Well, enough with the excuses. Here's my first installment of the food tour and I don't really know when I'm going to finish the series (perhaps with 18 Trinoma establishments and 24 from Serendra and Bonifacio High Street I'll probably finish by November hahaha).

Here's a short vlog about my experience at Portico:

My review of the establishment can be found at Lakwatsera Ako.

Isker! Isker! A Horror Video

There's so much content online and there are days when my muse is MIA I just think of becoming a lurker again for the rest of my life. LOL.

Here's a great short horror-film by Mr. Gerry Alanguilan, a famous comic book writer, artist and publisher who has worked with international comic book publishers Marvel and DC (he also has his own published comic books). Gerry is popularly known as the Komikero in Youtube.

Ah, get ready to get shocked.

He's got more videos in his Youtube channel worth watching. Enjoy!

Twitter Unplugged

I was offline most of the weekend and to summarize my weekend this is what I twitted -

the weekend. sm science and discovery center. lego mindstorms. indiana jones. burger king. kopi roti. french baker. and a fever.

I was stuck in bed the whole day on Sunday and I was extremely bored so I went online to check out what was happening in cyberworld and lo and behold Twitter was down! Sad face.

I don't know how many times I twit in a day, but these are things I missed when it was down and not available on Gtalk:

1. I could not do a quick rant.
2. I cannot share what I was eating.
3. I could not plug my new blog posts.
4. I could not bug other twitterers and see who's online.
5. I use twitter as well as a means to discover new reads.

Oh well, I do have a Jaiku account and FriendFeed. I love Twitter, but I hope they'll become stable soon.

Most Talked About Pinoy Chocolate in the PinoyBlogosphere

If you've been blog hopping in the Pinoyblogosphere and lurking in Twitter you would probably heard about what the Pinoy bloggers have been munching on lately - the new repackaged Goya chocolate!

When I was a kid Goya wrapped their chocolates in small no-need-to-bite pieces. I usually got them as giveaways in loot bags from birthday parties and I'd buy some with my meager allowance at the school canteen whenever I had some money left over. I have been longing for the Serg chocolate eversince I made that post about my "Top 10 Favorite Pinoy Chocolates and Biscuits" last year, but I have not seen any in the supermarket.

Well that longing has been bumped off by the new Goya chocolate. AJ of BaklaAko.com has been twittering about his love for the "Goya mint chocolate" flavor, but I have not seen any anywhere. Waaaahh... knock knock to the Goya distribution department, puh-leease provide some at SM Hypermarket Bicutan.

I'm definitely adding Goya to my list of favorite Pinoy chocolates. Try it!

Other posts about Goya chocolates:

AJ, the promotor
Ria, who tried it all

Got a Goya story? Lemme know!

The M.I.A. Muse

My writing muse has gone on a vacation without me. Perhaps she hied off somewhere South to go swimming because I unfortunately missed going to the beach this summer. Arghhhh!

Before I go and end up ranting here are five things that crossed my mind the past few days:

1. David Cook Rocks! I was not able to watch the whole season completely, but I did choose the right manok. I absolutely love how his version of "Always Be My Baby" and "Music of the Night". GIRLS! Watch his ad for Guitar Hero, Sweetie blogged about it.

2. On the local music scene, Nyoy Volante's fans should be rejoicing over his new album "Heartstrings". His rendition of "Because" and "What's Forever For" is adorable. The album shows off Nyoy's unique sound and would definitely make you kilig (thanks Sweetie for getting the album for me!). I've been a fan of his since we were kids doing the tinikling in our neighborhood gym (ahhh the things you do during summer). I will definitely NOT put that photo online.

3. Have you done anything significant today? With all the problems we (as individuals, as families, as a nation) face every day, more often than not we just end up grumbling and ranting about things. This doesn't really change anything eh? I realized when I was trudging along EDSA on my way to do a workshop 30 kilometers away from home that I should do something significant at least once a day and hopefully would brighten someone's day.

4. Magtipid! The 33-peso date at Serendra and Bonifacio High Street. During the Spot.ph Blogger Food Tour Sweetie and I were lucky to get a GC from Portico and we saved it up for a rainy day. That rainy day was last night. Spent PhP15 for dinner and another PhP15 at Timezone. Not bad eh? The clincher was paying PhP75 for parking. Ngyar.

5. Movies! I don't get to watch movies that often (uh, also TV), but I'm definitely making time to watch Indiana Jones this weekend!

My muse though is still missing in action! Arf!

Happy 75th Birthday Dad

I thought May 19 was still a week away. It was my brother-in-law (who's visiting from the US) who reminded me about it when he greeted Dad in advance last Saturday night. This sent me into a panic because: (1) I'm the only child who's here in Manila; and (2) I have not planned anything to celebrate such a special day!

Both my parents prefer simple and practical gifts. They don't like big celebrations and just want to do things privately. I remember the time when we (my Ate, Kuya and me) connived to get them married again on their 35th wedding anniversary (they're celebrating their golden anniversary in 2 years). My Ate was tasked to whisk them away from the house while I had to oversee the physical arrangements and do the inviting and my Kuya did the legwork and took care of the caterer. We had about over 70 guests (relatives and neighbors) in the house surprise them. It was a great night and one of the rare times that we were complete.

I only had 24 hours to think of something. I had wanted to go and find the Flyworld pentop computer that I think would be very useful for Dad, but I was unfortunately confined to stay in after hearing mass because of a horrendous tummy ache. So, I had to be creative. Famous videographer Buddy Gancenia seconded my thoughts on Twitter the night before - do an AVP! Huwwhaaattt?!?

Since I had no other choice that's what I did the whole day. Scanned a gazillion photos and bugged my Ate and Kuya to contribute whatever they could send through email. So I finished the preso just now (and my tummy still hurts!) and I realized a lot of things while doing it.

1. I love my Dad very, very much. Now I understand why at some point he didn't want me to have a boyfriend. Because after all the disappointments I've been through fact is it's going to be really hard to measure up to all the love he's been giving me.

2. I would not be me if not for him (and Mom, of course). I wouldn't be who and where I am today if my parents did not give me all the love and care. I am very lucky to have been smothered with love.

3. 75 years... IS a long time to live. I'm just less than half-way the number of years my Dad has been in this world. I wonder if I'll be able to do so many wonderful things as he has done. (And I wonder if I would reach that age).

Oh well... Dad, you're staff will probably get to read this first before you do hehe.

Anyway, HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I love you very much and thank you for being the greatest Dad in the whole, wide world.

*Photos
(1) Dad in his basketball jersey. His shooting record is still unbeaten to this day.
(2) Dad's James Dean look.
(3) Dad carrying me at the rooftop of the ancestral house in Naga.
(4) Me and Dad in Bali. That's my Kuya who made singit while we were having our photo taken. That's my proof that he's more makulit than me (that's for his grad-school professor).

Gusto Kita Too

Last week I was ranting on Twitter about being api my high school classmate-turned movie director. She had a hayday mincing my vlogs into scrap (boohuhuhu). I know, I know she's just after improving my videos... well Rica, my dear 4-year high school laboratory partner, I will and when I find the time I'm going to do that storyboard you're making me do =)

So anyway, Rica's twin sent me details about Rica's new indie-film "Gusto Kita Too". Rica Arevalo, Cinemalaya best director has previously done two award winning films, "ICU Bed #7" and "Saan Nagtatago si Happiness?"

"Gusto Kita Too" was shot entirely in the US and is a romantic comedy about how two Fil-Ams pursue true love in a funny Pinoy style courtship.

Cast: Brian Reyes and Casey Pascual
Produced by: Mediarevolution Film Productions
Edited by: Maan dela Cruz
Original Music: Jerrold Tarog

"Gusto Kita Too" is an added attraction, screening back to back with Will Fredo's sensational film, "Sa Pagdapo ng Mariposa" at IndieSine Robinson's Galleria starting May 21, 2008.

The Top Ten Rants on Twitter

I follow a huge number of people on my Twitter account. I don't know how that happened, I guess it's because everytime someone's adds me up I take a peek if he/she is interesting enough to follow. And now that list has grown to more than 200 Twitterers from all over the world. Gulp!

A lot of things happen on Twitter. Some people post updates about their blog, what they're eating, reading, watching or listening to, but I noticed a lot of people voice out their rants on Twitter (including me at least once a day) and here are the top ten rants I see on Twitter:

1. Being bored
2. Experiencing errors on apps/blog platforms and websites
3. Terrible service at a restaurant
4. Airline misfortunes
5. No lovelife
6. And the opposite, lovelife problems
7. Being stalked
8. Spam!
9. Experiencing plagiarism

and the most popular rant of all

10. Awful or no internet connection

I bumped into these sites through a friend... Try it out and vent your frustration (and I think I'll use it in one of my video blogs) -

Sad Trombone
Instant Rim Shot

Go on... just try it. What Twitter rants have you encountered?

My Mom, the Adventurista

Happy Mother's Day Mom!

I've learned so much from my Mom. Of course, she's my first teacher and I remember when I was a tiny kid she encouraged me to read and write a lot. She also did the same thing to Miguel since I left him with her during the day when I was in school and when I was already working. The summers that I spent playing with Lego also included dabbling on doing crafts. She would park me on the lawn in the afternoons on a banig with stuff to do - sewing dresses for my Barbie (it's still around somewhere), making pincushions which we sold in the parish bazaar, quilting or painting pots. She always kept me busy and I think that's why I can never sit still doing nothing.

I also think I got my adventurous, "lakwatsera" side from her. She started bringing me to the beach when I was just 8 months old and I we always had expeditions every year to Bicol with our neighbors. She's also into organizing events, especially fund raising activities (she still has that hatak). I don't really know how she does it, but everything she does is successful. She just does things to make it work. I don't think she'll blog though, she's not keen on writing (so that bit I got from my Dad), and you won't be able to get her to hold any high-ranking position in any organization, but she's an influencer nonetheless. She says she'd rather do things than lead. Oh and how can I forget how we both could magically make food appear on the table with our fingers. Her motto, "Let's your fingers do the walking!" (Ahhh that's probably why I dreamed of working for the yellow pages when I was a kid! And I did!).

Since most of the Mom bloggers were out of town last Friday for the Clara Ole event, I asked my Mom if she wanted to go with me and mentioned that she could bring her friends. I assumed she didn't want to go since she doesn't really like going to the mall and crowded places. I was really surprised when she asked me an hour before the event what time we should be there since she was going with her friends. Huwhaaaattt?!? LOL. She never fails to surprise me.

Always Game

So, off we went to Taste Asia for the Clara Ole event. I felt kinda pressured since I had my Mom and 3 Titas! So I felt like I had 4 moms yesterday since all of them have been my Mom's friends since I was a baby. Anyway, I was quite apprehensive since I didn't know how they'd react about the event. We first sat in the workshop on fashion. I know my Mom and my Titas weren't really into fixing themselves up, but I was again surprised when they were game about mixing and matching clothing.

Blessed

It's my Dad who's very lucky when it comes to raffle games. He always brings home the grand prize whenever he attends parties. Me and my Mom rarely win anything, but yesterday was a lucky, lucky day. The whole Sun Valley contingent (that's us) won several times in the raffle! One of my titas won thrice (a saucepan, a MNG cologne and a one-year magazine subscription). My Mom also won a MNG lotion which I promptly confiscated from her hehehe. [In the photo is my Mom with the event host, Dominic Ochoa (don't worry Dom I'm not going to blog about the stuff we chatted about!).] My Mom always reminds me to count my blessings and to thank God for it.

I had to leave my Mom and my Titas at Taste Asia since I had another appointment to attend. My apprehensions were actually shushed when my Tita said, "Huwag ka mag-alala okay kami dito kasi masaya!" My Mom reported during dinner last night that they actually finished the event (I was shocked!) since they had a grand time attending the stress management and make-over session. My Mom said that she even volunteered to be made-over (I'm having a heart-attack now...) and that they loved the food that was served and enjoyed the cooking demo.

I was really, really surprised my Mom finished the whole event and she said that my Titas want to attend more events of that kind. Thanks Clara Ole and SM!

Clara Ole

If you're wondering who Clara Ole is, you've probably encountered their products inserted as samples in some of the local women's magazines. I love eating salads and Clara Ole has a number of salad dressings available in supermarkets now. I love the honey mustard and asian dressing! I can imagine myself opening a can of tuna in brine and then tossing it with the Clara Ole salad dressing. Ulam na siya! Wasabi was quite interesting too. I can't wait to try out the loot my Mom managed to bring home. I was surprised to see a number of new stuff in the kitchen cabinet, including chocolate syrup! Ahhh... chocolate marble hotcakes for merienda!

Love you Mom. Mwah.

Me, Miguel and Lego

I got my first set of Lego when I was about 4 years old. That set is still alive and has been mixed up with Miguel's set. Being the youngest in the clan I spent countless summers playing with my Lego. I thought I'd become an architect because of the houses I used to build using Lego. But... but... my drawing skills have not grown beyond doodling apples, coconut trees and the Mayon Volcano. LOL.

I exposed Miguel to building things eversince he was a baby. When he was about 4 years old I got him 2 sets of Tamiya. I was forced to build it for him since the parts were very small. I must have done something wrong because it wouldn't budge. I tried dismantling the engine (you had to build it yourself) but it still wouldn't work. Miguel got impatient with me and fixed it by himself. He built the second Tamiya set and has since always asked for toys that he could build.

Miguel's a voracious reader, so he explores a lot of stuff online and has since wished for a number of Lego sets. He's so lucky since Lego nowadays is more than just "building blocks". Here's a video he took of his Lego Monster Dino -

Because of Lego, Miguel's been interested to do robotics. I'm not sure yet what course he'd want to take in college, but it's one of the many interests he has for now. I'm glad I finally found the place to pique his interest more. Saw the poster of the Lego Mindstorm Robotics Center at the SM Science and Discovery Center at the Mall of Asia. Below is Professor Rox Cosico who agreed to talk a little about the workshop for You Got Tech. He mentioned during our chat that the Lego Mindstorms Robotics Center is the second one in Asia and they underwent training in Singapore.

I'm really excited about Miguel's participation in the workshop since it's been hard to get him interested in the normal summer things. Well, nagmana lang sa nanay eh hehe.

May your tribe grow Rox! =)

Want to enroll?
Lego Mindstorms Robotics Center
SM Discovery Center, Mall of Asia
For inquiries, please call +632-556-0331 or 0661
Workshop fee is only PhP200

I also requested for some flyers, let me know if you want one.

Lea, My Life Onstage

I was about 5 years old when I first watched Lea Salonga play Annie onstage and soon after that she released her first album that included "Small Voice". As any jeprox kid my Mom made me sing it, but at that time I enjoyed dancing "Staying Alive" more... ha-ha-ha-ha staying alive, staying alive.

Anyway, I think that was the last time I watched her perform live but I followed her career eversince. I know I watched "Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal" with my Dad. I vaguely remember me and my classmates singing songs from Miss Saigon during practical arts class in high school. Getting mad at my ex because he didn't want to accompany me to CCP to watch Miss Saigon. Crying over her wedding song ("I Do") while watching it on Youtube. Almost swooning when I met her husband, Rob, siyempre nakipa-autograph na rin ako ng CD through his staff. Hahaha.

So you can just imagine how excited I was when Cecile SMSed an invitation to attend a press conference (of course as a tag along to Sweetie). I've had the privilege of attending a number of music-related events and I must say that Lea is the biggest star of all. Her bearing says it all. Bow ka na lang sa galeng talaga.

From the event I gathered that she's celebrating 30 years in the business and will be holding a show entitled, "Lea, My Life Onstage". Together with brother, Gerard, she performed two songs, "Tomorrow" and "Journey" with the Filharmonika. I was just tulala the whole time she was singing, so Sweetie shot the video for the second song. The show will be held at the CCP on May 23 and 24. I want to waaaaatttchhh!!!

Here are the songs she performed live with a full orchestra at the press con.

Losers Party!

I was really baffled when I received the cutesy-cartooney "Who Says Losers Don't Get Invited to Parties?" invitation from GM since I had to ponder on the fact that I was invited to a party because I'm a loser. Huwwwwhaaaattt?!? I just found it weird. I've known that I'm different eversince I was a kid, so I thought this was normal hahaha. Anyway, my blogger-friend from Davao, Migs, was interested to go so I said I'd go with him (and dragged Miguel along hehehe).

The noisy, noisy man, Ade Magnaye, asked over Twitter how the event went and I said, "It was really fun and worth the hassle of going out." David & Goliath sure knows how to make parties fun. Here's why:

1. No boring t-shirt display.

2. I was early, so I got a caricature made (does she look like me? I was fidgeting while I was being drawn).

3. Cute-fab host, Gabe Mercado made sure everything was upbeat.

4. Games! First was charades. I know I should've gone and guessed the last "word". Na-shy kasi me eh. LOSER! LOL.

Losers Dating Game with Arthur (the chicken during the 88db.com Party) as the "searcher". It was really hilarious.

5. Freebies! Foto-loco and a loot bag with a magnet, stickers, GCs and a keychain. Also got additional GC coz we were first to arrive. Yay!

So what is David & Goliath? David & Goliath is an American clothing company founded in 2000 by Todd Goldman which was named after Todd's father (David) and dog (Goliath). The brand is known for printing slogans and quotes with images that are meant to make people laugh. The company that brought it to the Philippines is the same company that brought Havaianas and Terry S.A. The "Little Losers" collection is now available at David & Goliath stores located at Bonifacio High Street, Powerplant Mall, TriNoMa, Robinsons Place Manila Midtown, Greenbelt 5 and Rustan's Makati.

World Pyrolymics 2008 and Something for Moms

I spent more than 12 hours at the Mall of Asia last Saturday. My friends from SM advised that we should get a reservation in one of the restos if we were going to watch the Pyrolympics. Woke up early on Saturday and headed to MOA before lunch. After checking out the restos at the second floor we decided to reserve at UCC Cafe (the barge is right in front of it).

Since we had a few hours to waste Sweetie, Miguel, Andrew, Migs and the Misis, and I decided to do our own MOA food tour. We hopped from one resto to another and this is probably why my face now resembles a plate. Huhuhu. No more food tours for me muna!

I was quite excited about the event since I've never been to one. I heard about the monstrous traffic jams it caused last year, so I thought it must be really good. I was also looking forward to using my new camera (and put it on fireworks mode! LOL).

Here's a short video about the Pyrolympics, clips taken by me and Miguel... watch out for the heart-shaped fireworks!

And here's a couple of medyo matinong photos I took:

My Tsamba Photo. Fireworks with lightning.

Flower arrangement. Well that's how it looks to me.

Sea urchin.

Happy love fireworks.

Onslaught of colours.

At some point I stopped taking photos since I just wanted to enjoy watching. Besides the boys were busy doing that already. Most of them missed seeing the heart-shaped fireworks because they were busy looking at their camera's LCD. Haha. Good thing Miguel managed to capture it on video.

Hot Summer Bloggers Party

I was already dazed from the iBlog4 and a mini U.P. F.A.T. (food appreciation tour) and by the time I arrived at Katips I was already quite cross eyed and bangag (as usual!!!). I was also quite annoyed with myself since I wasn't able to put together an appropriate "apple" outfit. The previous days were just simply booked. If not for Sweetie, I would not have been able to find a shirt with an apple on it (which my friends from Davao said looked more like a cherry than an apple!)... waaaaahhh. Why is it when it comes to costume parties I always end up blah?

Anyway, I was quite surprised with the turn-out. I was feeling uberly nervous that there wouldn't be enough attendees (thus disappointing the sponsor). I'm glad I had a burrito before proceeding to Katips. It was a fun-filled night and I'd say the people from 88db.com certainly know how to entertain with all the games and smooth flowing program. It also helped that the host was very makulit!

You've probably heard about the beer drinking contest, the chicken, a batang yagit and a pinoy blogero invading the party, and the famous Lose Your Beer Belly band... watch this short vlog I made about the event and be inggit you didn't go!

Super duper thanks to 88db.com for sponsoring the party!
